The menstrual health market

Transforming the menstrual health market to end period poverty

Around the world, 1 in 4 women and girls struggle to manage their menstruation safely and with dignity, preventing them from participating fully in the communities and economies they live and work in. This is more than a health issue; it’s a barrier to education, growth, equality and prosperity, for people and for countries.

Existing approaches to address period poverty have failed to deliver structural change. SHF believes that the answer lies in building thriving markets — that deliver access to safe, quality, and affordable menstrual solutions for women and girls, everywhere.

SHF works together with governments, entrepreneurs and funders to make menstrual health markets viable, investible and sustainable. Through market transformation, SHF ensures that people who menstruate have access to a variety of quality menstrual health and hygiene products at a price they can afford and with minimal environmental impact.

To do so, SHF identifies the root causes of market shortcomings and builds a stronger ecosystem through market-shaping actions along the menstrual hygiene product supply chain.

By developing the menstrual health market, SHF promotes local production, women-led businesses and creates investment opportunities. The impact is far reaching, and SHF has commissioned assessments on the impact of investing in menstrual health and hygiene.
